Water Polo - Lesson Plan

Level 1

Skills

Must See

Throwing of ball (pass & shoot)

Swipe ball from non master hand and pick ball up from below. Ball resting on palm with wrist open.  Hip, shoulder and elbow synchrnise movement from back. Flipping of wrist to throw ball

Thread water

Learning split eggbeater kick.  Movement at all direction (front, back, side) with driving leg and support leg

Protecting the ball

Always putting body in between ball and defender and face defender before stepping out to pick up ball.

Head up swimming with and without ball

Head must not be swinging from side to side.  Hands not to hit ball when swimming with it. Using body or head to push it.

Tactical

Must See

Deliver ball from defense to attack

Swim away from defender to collect ball when they are in front of the person with ball. Make pass to team mate ahead and continue to swim up to attack.

Basic rule of the game

Minor foul, Major foul & counter foul. Hand signal of referee.


Level 2

Skills

Must See

Handling (dry pass)

Receving the ball with body facing goal without dropping it on water and pass back with body turning to face the receiver for 3m.

Cross Shot

Receving the ball with body facing goal without dropping it on water and shoot towards goal.  Passer to watch shooter, the moment shooter stop passer must get ball to him fast.

Coil up position

Body position must be in such way that master leg is put in front with non master leg as support leg.  Do a swim off, jumping & blocking from this position.

Tactical

Must See

Learn to play the ball to attacker who got away from his/her defender.

Able to protect the ball or get a foul (face to face with defender) and look out for own team mate that got away from defender and make a pass to him/her.

Counter attack 2 on1

Swim to 2m and make space for fellow attack to shoot or getting ready to receive a cross to shoot.


Level 3

Skills

Must See

Handling (dry pass)

Receving the ball with body facing goal without dropping it on water and pass back with body turning to face the receiver for 5m.

Shoot with chaser behind

Able to take shot with a chaser behind giving pressue knowing how to position leg to get the block and shoot. (getting non master leg to support if chaser is on non ball side as a driving leg if opponent on ball side)

Learning to defend on ball side and not foul the player

Must place body closer to the passer then the attacker in coil up position with hands on opponent feeling his position at all time and eye on ball.  If the pass is overheard & could not be intercept, switch and swim into inside lane and continue no foul.

Driving into ball side position

Able to drive pass either by changing direction or change of speed to get to ball side and collect ball to shoot

Tactical

Must See

Learn to recognize situation to foul the player.

Foul the player if he is passing to a team mate that is in dangerious position.

Couter attack 3 on 2

Swim to 2m and make space for fellow attack to shoot or getting ready to receive a cross to shoot.


Level 4

Skills

Must See

Center forward skill

Able to hold player back(knowing which leg is the driving and supporting leg) and step out and pick up ball from below and shoot (back shot/sling shot).

Center back skill

Able to mark center by the front with eye on ball and hands feeling the position of opponent at all time and move according to where the ball has move to with good balance (split eggbeater kick, coil up position).

Tactical

Must See

Play game 4 on 4

Able to perform skill learn in level 1 to 4. Basic formation on 4 on 4.

Couter attack 4 on 3

Swim to 2m and make space for fellow attack to shoot or getting ready to receive a cross to shoot.

Level 5

Skills

Must See

Handling (dry pass)
